KARACHI: The council of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation on Monday passed budget of over Rs24.84 billion for fiscal year 2020-21.
Karachi Mayor Wasim Akhtar presented the budget before the council where Deputy Mayor Arshad Hussain and Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Syed Saif-ur-Rehman were also present.
The KMC's total estimated budget is Rs24,845,900,086. The current receipts in the budget are Rs20.67 billion whereas the capital receipts are Rs1.66 billion. Over Rs2.5 billion was allocated for District Annual Development Program and establishment expenditures are Rs15.57 billion. Rs200.96 million was earmarked for repair and maintenance while estimations for development works are Rs4.38 billion. No new tax was imposed for the financial year 2020-21.
At the outset of the council's session, resolutions were adopted for expressing condolences over deaths of former City Nazim Naimatullah Khan, JI former chief Syed Munawar Hasan, Mufti Naeem, Allama Talib Jawhari, Tariq Aziz, Sabiha Khanam, UC Chairmen - Irtaza Khan, Shahid Khan, Shahnawaz Ahmed - and provincial minister Ghulam Murtaza Baloch.
Besides the members also prayed for those who died in PIA plan crash, several buildings' collapse and also prayed for speedy recovery of those who sustained injuries in the incidents. They also condemned the attack on Pakistan Stock Exchange Building and appreciated the personnel of law-enforcement agencies for their rapid response.
Presenting the fourth budget of his tenure, Mayor Karachi Wasim Akhtar said that they had taken all-out measures to ensure provision of facilities at grassroots level. COVID-19 has affected the entire world badly and after that planning for future is not an easy task. He said the resources which were nominal even before the lockdown had almost finished. The KMC's biggest source of income is the grant from Sindh government.
Giving details, Akhtar said that Rs680 million is earmarked for repair and maintenance of roundabouts, roads, footpaths and sewerage lines of all six districts; Special Development Project and Nehr-e-Khayam got Rs120 million each; Rs120 million has also been fixed for different works at UCs. He added that Rs100 million is earmarked for purchasing of ventilators; Rs100 million is fixed for purchasing of different equipment for hospitals under administrative control of KMC.
Akhtar said that Rs100 million is earmarked for kidney hospital at Hill Park; Rs300 million for uplift work at Shahabuddin Market Parking Plaza; Rs100 million for uplift and lighting of big arteries; and Rs100 million is fixed for uplift works at different parks.
Similarly, Rs100 million is fixed for cleanliness of drains while Rs75 million is earmarked for maintenance of flyovers, underpasses and bridges. Rs75 million is earmarked for establishment of fire station, uplift of landfill sites and Zulfikarabad Oil Tankers Parking Terminal's phase II each. Likewise, the KMC allocated Rs52 million for development works at zoos and Safari Park as well as Rs50 million for purchasing of different animals and birds.
Giving details of amount allocated for different departments, the Mayor said that Rs5097.242 million was earmarked for medical and health services; Rs5855.6 million for pension fund and other dues of employees; Rs3499.04 for municipal services; Rs2805.431 million for engineering department; Rs1150.729 for revenue department; Rs1134 for parks and horticulture; Rs867 million for cultural, sports and recreation; Rs380.46 million for transport and communication; Rs368.92 million for finance and accounts (MCUT); Rs168.42 million for law department; Rs80.49 million for investment and promotion; Rs66.198 million for information and technology and Rs861.032 million for the secretariat.
