UK appoints former Bank of Canada deputy Wilkins to BoE role

"Carolyn has a respected track record built over 20 years at the Bank of Canada and her extensive experience in international financial regulation will be a real asset to the FPC," British finance minister Rishi Sunak said.
The FPC sets capital ratios for British banks and insurers and regulates aspects of mortgage lending, as well as broader financial risks. Its remit does not extend to monetary policy or financial misconduct.

Sterling falls 0.8pc versus dollar as Treasury yields climb

Sterling was down 0.8% against a stronger dollar at $1.3885.
The weaker pound is largely a function of higher yields pushing the US dollar into positive territory.
Versus the euro, sterling fell 0.3% on Friday to 85.97 pence.

Bank of England's Haldane warns inflation ‘tiger’ is prowling

People are right to caution about the risks of central banks acting too conservatively by tightening policy prematurely.
"There is a tangible risk inflation proves more difficult to tame, requiring monetary policymakers to act more assertively than is currently priced into financial markets," Haldane said.

UK might need negative rates if recovery disappoints: BoE's Vlieghe

Vlieghe said in a speech published by the BoE that there was a risk of lasting job market weakness hurting wages and prices.
"In such a scenario, I judge more monetary stimulus would be appropriate, and I would favour a negative Bank Rate as the tool to implement the stimulus," he said.

Negative rates may be BoE's best tool in future: Saunders

Saunders, one of nine members of the BoE's Monetary Policy Committee, said in December that he saw scope for borrowing costs modestly below zero.
"If we wanted to lower the yield curve from current levels, then I suspect a lower Bank Rate might be more appropriate," he told the Resolution Foundation think tank.

Britain's FTSE 100 index pared initial losses after the Bank's statement to traded 0.3% lower on the day, helped by the boost to bank stocks.

Broadbent said the smaller slowdown in inflation reflected shifts in consumer demand during the pandemic that had led to temporary capacity constraints in businesses.
The consequences for cost pressures over the medium term - and therefore for monetary policy - are probably limited.
